What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)?
- It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, poisonous gas which can be emitted by faulty appliances powered by any fuel that burns.
Signs of Carbon Monoxide
- Look out for gas appliances burning with a yellow/orange flame that's normally blue
- extra condensation
-pilot lights blowing out
-sooting and/or yellow stains around appliances

- "flu-like" symptoms
- feeling tired or drowsy
- headaches
- chest or stomach pains
- erratic behaviour
- nausea and or vomiting
- breathlessness
- giddiness
- visual problems
- Once a year service all appliances that are powered by any fuel that burns - gas, coal, wood, oil, petrol etc
- Sweep chimneys and flues
- Do not block air vents
- Make sure your family know the signs, you might be responsible and have your appliances checked, but they may be going into other peoples homes/ premises and may be at risk.
- Landlords are legally bound to arrange annual gas safety checks
- home owners are not legally bound to have appliances serviced but is strongly advised for your safety and is in place for a reason.
- Have a BS approved, EN50291 Audible alarm fitted to your home. The Honeywell SF450EN alarm (rrp £39.99) can be supplied free of charge when you have 2 appliances serviced with Gas Care uk.
CO alarms are important but ARE NOT a substitute for servicing or annual safety checks. They can act as an emergency notification of CO, but is is important to prevent CO poisoning in the first place!
